Smile! Nine great reasons to buy from Midnight Oil Books.

Est. 1978. Rejects has an iconic status among Kirkcaldy stores, being that most unusual of things: a successful, independent, family-run Department Store. Its premises occupy eight separate halls, spread over two stories.

Originally, Rejects operated from premises on Dunnikier Road, but is now situated in Sinclairtown, one of the historic villages subsumed within the Burgh of Kirkcaldy, and is on the central thoroughfare through Gallatown, Sinclairtown and Pathhead, St Clair Street.

Anecdotally, it is remarkable how well known Rejects is, as I discovered in conversation with friends from both Tayside and Lanarkshire, both of whom knew about it and make a point of visiting each time they are in town. It is a rare thing indeed to come away without whatever it was that you were looking for, and the store comes into its own in its specialist fields like cloths and fabrics; also, the kitchenware department has often proven to be an excellent hunting-ground for gifts. Mostly, however, its attraction lies in not being a chain, and while this doesn't always entail that a shop will have an original stock range, it certainly seems to be true for Rejects.

The first floor 'semi-self-service' Cafe serves a wholesome range of workman-like drinks, hot meals, and cold snacks wrapped in cling-film. The decor as you would expect is palatial, the serving areas are neat and clean, although at busy periods the staff struggle to keep the tables clear. A Hungarian friend's first experience of the cafe was being yelled at across the dining area for sitting at the 'wrong' table, but otherwise I have always found the staff to be warm, pleasant and efficient. The cafe is always busy, profitable territory for people-watching and running into old friends. Its clientèle is pleasantly mixed: young, old, and - in old-Fife egalitarian style - something of a class-blind confluence.

If you are coming from out of town, Kirkcaldy East Junction on the A92, is your best exit. The car park on the north side of Rejects, typically fills up quickly and stays full for most of the day giving the impression of it being difficult to find a space. In reality, there are oodles of spaces in the St Clair St area, between Rejects overflow further down the west side of the building, the two Council car parks on the South side of the store. The adjoining Aldi for some reason has the mother of all car parks which is rarely more than 15% full save for Rejects spillover. Staff would tend to occupy the 'hidden' car park situated by the south-west entrance, but accessed from the north.

Credit cards are accepted throughout the store.
