The Shop
Est. 2006. Situated in traditional, stone-built, 'Co-operative' shop premises, Midnight Oil Books stocks an esoteric and quirky range of titles, with linguistics, continental philology, theology and the Classics particularly well represented. In addition, we publish historical, biographical, local interest and literary monographs, and offer freelance translation (OCS, Russian, Polish, German and French) and proof-reading services.
The Scene
During the day, Midnight Oil Books is the perfect retreat, with its towering bookcases, forgotten corners and old leather armchair. Our stock is always turning and if we do not have the title that you want in stock, ask and we will order it for you. Out of hours, the shop plays host to soirées, readings, book launches, play reading groups and associated events.
The Staff
Between the three permanent staff members, Brian, Jennifer and David, and the occasional volunteer or regular, you will an on-demand source of recommendations, advice and insight. And if we don't know, we'll put you in touch with someone who does.
The Story
Sadly, Kirkcaldy has in recent years been deprived of a number of fine literary establishments: Burts bookshop (c. 1890s-1970s); Book Ends secondhand bookshop; and, Inglis Allen printers (1867-2007). In the mid-nineteenth century, in Linktown and Kirkcaldy, there were eight independent booksellers for a population of only 9,000 persons (these being: Robert Bryson, (&, Binder), 132 High Street; J. Crawford, (& Binder), 201 High Street; John Davidson, 21 High Street; Alexander Grant, 276 High Street; George McIntosh L. D., 127 High Street; Thomas Ness, (& Binder), 229 High Street; Peter Purves, Linktown; and, Williams Stocks, Linktown, Abbotshall. Together, with local publishers such as Akros Publications, Kirkcaldy Civic Society, and the town's other independent bookshop, Coventry's, we seek to keep this proud tradition of scholarship and publishing alive.
